“Soot bamboo” (susutake) refers to bamboo that has been used in the thatched roofs of traditional Japanese houses. Over the course of 100 to 200 years, from the late Edo to the Meiji period, the bamboo was naturally smoked by the hearth fire, gradually acquiring its rich, deep coloration. Today, high-quality soot bamboo has become increasingly rare.

Bamboo craftsman Toru Hatsuta creates his works by bringing out the natural character and warmth of this aged bamboo.

The gradation and tone of color, as well as the natural patterns, vary depending on the viewing angle and the direction it is placed. This vase is designed to be displayed upright, using the thicker base portion of the bamboo near its root.

To ensure long-term use, please avoid direct sunlight and allow to dry thoroughly before storing.

Toru Hatsuta

Following the techniques and aesthetic sense of traditional bamboo basket making, he creates works that evoke the contemporary era, focusing on everyday tools, tea ceremony utensils, and bamboo crafts.

He has been selected for the Eastern Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition for two consecutive years, and his work "Sensujimoriki" is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
