Misato Seki

Lacquer art

Mirei Seki / MISATO SEKI

Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1984, she majored in lacquer art at the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts. Her graduation piece, a wearable lacquer art piece, won a purchase award, and since then she has consistently used lacquer to create contemporary jewelry that questions the relationship between the body and accessories.

She uses traditional lacquer techniques such as maki-e, raden, and lacquer in modern decorative art expressions, and in 2019 her work "slit" won the Herbert-Hofmann-Prize at Schmuck, the world's largest contemporary jewelry competition. She currently has an atelier in Kanagawa Prefecture and is actively exhibiting her works both in Japan and abroad.
